Infill is the layer of sand or granular material beneath the turf fibers that keeps blades upright, supports drainage, and gives the surface its cushioning. Over time, pet urine, waste residue, and general use cause infill to compact, saturate, and lose its ability to let liquid pass through properly. Once infill reaches that point, no amount of surface cleaning fixes the underlying problem – the old material has to come out and be replaced with fresh, pet-safe infill.
Signs that infill needs replacing include persistent odor that doesn't improve after cleaning and disinfecting, standing water or slow drainage after rain even in areas without heavy shade, turf that feels hard or compacted underfoot rather than cushioned, and a general staleness to the yard that treatments alone aren't resolving. If you're a few years into a heavily used dog run and odor keeps coming back no matter what you try, saturated infill is very often the actual cause.
We start by identifying which zones have the worst infill saturation, since replacement isn't always needed across the entire yard – concentrated pet areas usually need it far more urgently than lightly used sections. The old, compacted infill is extracted from the affected areas, working carefully to avoid damaging the turf backing during removal. Fresh, pet-safe infill – typically an antimicrobial or zeolite-based sand designed to actively neutralize odor rather than just support the fibers – is then installed and worked evenly into the base to restore proper drainage and cushioning throughout the treated zones.
Cost is based on square footage needing replacement and infill type, since specialty odor-control infill costs more than standard sand but performs significantly better for pet-heavy yards. A yard in Malden On Hudson, NY with one or two saturated hot spots is a smaller job than a full-yard infill replacement on turf that's several years old and never been refreshed.
If odor and drainage keep coming back no matter how often you clean, the infill underneath is likely the real issue. Call (928) 427-2477 for an assessment and estimate.
